For those of us who can't, or choose not to, go to Washington, DC for the National Equality March on October 11, it is still important to join together in calls for action in the quest for fairness, equality and human rights for all.
While much of our energy is focused on the hard and necessary day-to-day work still to be done in our communities and in our states, a message to the president from out here where we are could be an important boost.
So, the idea is simple:
Get a postcard representing your community and send something along the lines of the following message to:
President Barack Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington, DC 20500
Dear Mr. President,
I live in [name of town, county, state].
Because of the threats of harassment, violence, and discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people and allies, I am often forced to live in silence, and fear, in my own community.
I'm writing to ask you to confirm your commitment to fairness, equality and human rights for all people, be a fierce advocate for change, and keep the promises you made in your inspiring campaign to: pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, expand Hate Crimes legislation, end 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,' and repeal the Defense of Marriage Act now.
It is time to speak Out In The Silence!

OUT IN THE SILENCE on GRIT TV
Got Docs: GRIT TV with Laura Flanders - It's popular on the right wing radio dial to pretend that homosexuality is something happening in San Francisco and other big city enclaves, but this week's Got Doc is about the love, and hate, of small towns. When filmmaker Joe Wilson announced that he was going to marry another man, his small Pennsylvania hometown erupted. But beneath the controversy, a mother reached out to him about help with her teenage son coming out of the closet. A film is coming out of this experience, "Out In The Silence", and the early buzz is overwhelmingly positive. We'd love to share a little more with you so check it out.
